i don't know what it is about this weather that just inspires me to snuggle in deeply-- whether that is snuggling into this life here with my husband, into the living room with my first-ever (from this school) set of in-class assignments to grade, into my journal with a cup of tea (to my coffee drinking buddies... i'm finding myself converting to hot tea. it just makes everything feel right to drink hot tea. what is that? especially aveda's tea. oh yes, oh yes.), or just plain into myself...into reflection.
for those of you not living here, i will try to describe our weather: today it was april. the air was just slightly balmy, with the most soothing coolness in the breeze. the sky was overcast (though not my favorite color: dismal slate). the breeze pushed my wind chimes around while the unusual spring time cloak the whole day wore made it feel like it was the end of the school year and we should be planning a trip to the beach with friends. last night, the crickets sang away and i expected lightning bugs, but tonight a cold front danced in on the arm of a short spring-like rain, and the bugs are silent. my front door is open, letting in the country breeze coming off the grassy field across from our house, and i can hear the tap-splat-tapping of the rain against my front porch.
i love georgia.
i've decided that this state was created for artists. melancholy, easily-bored sorts who need variety and drama and year-round lady bugs. my heart soars all the time over our weather. even when it's miserable, at least it's interesting.
couple that with a hair cut from a good friend, an afternoon shooting the breeze with another friend in her 100-plus year old house, and coming home to a husband who is excited about life and opportunity and vision.... i had no idea life could be so good.
that's all. oh, except to mention something i've been thinking of for the last few days: "that one day, my four little children would be judged, not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character" (Martin Luther King, Jr). the content of our character. that we would all be known for that.
